10:30 - 12:15 Sat 18th September 2021 Birmingham's Artsy Bits

£6.00 £15.00

Birmingham has a huge artistic and architectural heritage with public art all around as you walk through the city’s streets and squares. Our walking tour sets off from the modernistic Grand Central concourse. We use the public art and architecture to tell the story of the city.

We look at the significant initiatives to install art on our streets in the last decades of the twentieth century. Back to the 1960s sees brutalist concrete architectural and artistic influences. The period between the wars sees art deco features. Even further back we see Victorian art and architecture that has managed to avoid the demolition teams that so often herald the next new development in this ever changing city.

The tour starts conveniently for those arriving from London and other cities on the Grand Central concourse (by the platform5 sign!) above New Street Station. It ends at the modernistic Library of Birmingham in the Centenary Square. For those who want more, there is often another tour starting an hour or so later from the Library giving time for a light lunch and freshen up before walking the canals and discovering  more of the industrial and social history of this amazing city.
