PRIVATE TOUR: Discovering Birmingham & More
Two-part tour of Birmingham with refreshment stop if required
- Discovering Birmingham: We start in the ultra-modern Centenary Square at the Library of Birmingham. We introduce Birmingham, giving a feel for the development of the medieval market town and see how it developed into a centre of the industrial revolution. We look at the modern city around us and understand where it is heading. We visit the city centre canals and discover their original use and how they integrate into modern developments. In Brindleyplace we consider social issues of Victorian Birmingham and the roles of our famous Lord Mayor Joseph Chamberlain. We walk into the city centre and consider Victoria and Chamberlain Square, seeing significant architecture all around us and also very modern developments.
Refreshment stop – Java Coffee Lounge, Colmore Row if required.
- Understanding the Jewellery Quarter: We take the Midland Metro to the Jewellery Quarter. We look at different types of industry, from sole trader artisan jewellers to medium size businesses. We consider the huge industries that developed here with inventions such as silver plate and pen nib production dominating the world for over 100 years. We use our unique ‘museum on the streets’ approach to show items that were made in these huge industries. We walk the ‘secret canal’ back to Centenary Square understanding much about the modern city on the way.
